FPRA Board Member Wins Crystal Reel Award

Barry Eager was given a Crystal Reel Award at the 20th Annual Florida motion Picture and Television Association awards.

His award-winning work producing a six-minute video, “The Scott Center for Autism Treatment,” was done in partnership with Florida institute of Technology and showcases the university’s work in treating autism.

Barry is a 1989 graduate of FIT and currently serve’s as the FPRA Space Coast Chapter historian. This is his second Crystal Reel Award, his first was presented in 2007 for his production of FIT’s Golden Anniversary Campaign video for their 50th anniversary.

The Florida Motion Picture and Television Association created the Crystal Reel Awards to highlight outstanding achievements in the television, motion picture, digital media and recording industries in Florida.

Education/Background:  AA in general studies from BCC, BA in Sociology from UCF (2007), 1 ½ years in PR with Brevard Family Partnership, though always involved in marketing and sales in previous employment. Before BFP I was the Executive Assistant with Indian River Consulting Group from May 2000 through September 2006 where responsibilities included everything from booking travel to coordinating events.

I was born in Buffalo, NY, but raised in Miami. Moved to Melbourne in 2000 and have been loving life ever since.

Why you joined the FPRA:  I joined FPRA to further develop my PR and communication skills as well as network with other PR professionals to share ideas and expand our efforts both professionally and personally.

What’s the most challenging part of your job:  The most challenging part of my job is juggling multiple responsibilities at the same time and assuring deadlines are met.

What’s the easiest part of your job:  Is there an easy part of my job?!  Working with the community and attending community events is one of the most enjoyable parts of my job. Connecting with the community is vital to our agency and makes a world of difference to having the community understand who we are and what we do.

What are your hobbies/interests:  Other than work, I am involved in a few activities at church and love to read – not much time for anything else.

Family Info: Husband, Eddie and cat, Faith. My parents live in Palm Bay (came up from Miami after we did) and my brother and his family have lived in Palm Bay for the past 2-3 years.

PR 2.0 – New Media, New Tools, New Audiences by Dierdre Breakenridge (2008, 274 pages)

I picked up the “PR 2.0″ book at this year’s annual FPRA Conference in Boca… A newcomer to the social media realm at the time, I thought this may be a good way to get additional education on the basics I already knew. This was a decent book for beginners- Going into it, I’d already established a Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn account for my work, as well as an executive blog. We were also playing with the idea of utilizing YouTube and Wikipedia as part of our new social media plan. Knowing this level of information allowed me to get through the first part of the book very quickly, but the latter chapters were quite helpful.

This book covers the broad environment of social media in an easy-to-understand fashion, from the perspective of a seasoned PR professional. It covers all the basic topics, including:  PR 2.0 research and measurement tools, audio/video tools for enhanced web communications, the variety of social media tools that are currently utilized by corporate America, and even a significant number of pro interviews and case studies. The book applies to all PR practitioners, from those engaged in large, corporate communications teams to one-man shops in smaller businesses to PR agencies. I found especially helpful the sections on social media news releases and interactive newsrooms – two areas that I happen to have great interest in.

I also learned a little more about RSS technology and social bookmarking along the way – two areas that were relatively new to me at the time.   The only downside to this book (in my opinion) was some of the case studies toward the end – they felt a little “salesy” to me (like the author got a kickback for the advertising space!)… Other than that though, it was a good, fast read and well worth the investment (for an even better deal, get it used on Amazon!).  I’d definitely recommend it to my PR counterparts who aren’t yet experts at social media.

Jessica Rye, APR, to Receive Space Communications Award

CONGRATULATIONS to our very own Jessica Rye, APR, for being recognized by the National Space Club Florida Committee!

Senior Manager of Regional Communications for ATK, Jessica Rye, APR, will be presented with the Harry Kolcum Memorial News & Communication Award on November 10, 2009.   Long-time member and Past President of the Florida Public Relations Association, Jessica will be recognized by the National Space Club Florida Committee (NSCFL) at their November luncheon.

Each year, the Kolcum Award “recognizes area representatives of the news media and communications professions for excellence in their ability to communicate the space story along Florida’s Space Coast and throughout the world,” according to the National Space Club website.  Also being recognized this year is Scott Harris, Anchor for Channel 13 NEWS.

Prior to joining ATK, Jessica served as the Chief of External and Internal Communications for United Launch Alliance, and she served as NASA’s primary spokesperson and public affairs officer for the Shuttle Program at Kennedy Space Center.  Prior to joining NASA, Jessica served as strategic media relations specialist for United Space Alliance.

In August, Jessica was named the Public Relations Professional of the Year by the Space Coast FPRA.  In 2007, Jessica served as State President of the Florida Public Relations Association, a 1,500-member organization.  Jessica earned her Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) in 2001.

The Kolcum Communications award is named in honor of Harry Kolcum, the former managing editor of Aviation Week & Space Technology, who was Cape bureau chief from 1980 to 1993 prior to his death in 1994.  Kolcum was a founding member of the NSCFL.  In 2008, the award was presented to Leigh Holt, Brevard County’s Government Relations Manager, and Justin Ray, editor of Spaceflight Now, a Cape Canaveral-based space news website.

To be selected, honorees must be either a public affairs professional who speaks on behalf of a corporate, government or military organization that is involved with launch or mission operations along Florida’s Space Coast, or a professional member of the news media who regularly covers space and launch operations at the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

The NSCFL November luncheon and awards presentation is being held at the DoubleTree Oceanfront Hotel in Cocoa Beach on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm EST.  The cost to attend is $17.00 for NSCFL members, $20 for non-members.  Payment may be made at the door.  More information can be found at http://www.nscfl.org.

David Waters, Founder, David Waters Productions
David is a reporter, public relations professional, and runs his own multimedia video production company, David Waters Productions. For more than a decade, he was a daily presence on local tv when he reported for News 13 and ran the Brevard County bureau. He also appeared for most of that time on CNN and continues to appear on the network to this day.  These days, you’ll find him running David Waters Productions, where he puts his years of local and national media experience to use by helping companies get noticed through public relations events, video products, and interactive social media.  You can still see him on SpaceflightNow.com where he coanchors a live interactive shuttle launch show that he helped create.  It is seen in 181 countries by more than half a million people.
