Suzie DeBusk presents ‘Understanding Emotional Intelligence at Work’ at our Professional Development luncheon at the Holiday Inn Viera!

Overview:  Despite equal intellectual capacity, training, or experience, some people excel while others of the same caliber lag behind.  Ever wonder why?  More than 25 years of research in the neurological field and specific study about factors contributing to success in the workplace have resulted in breaking through perceptions about intelligence.  Quantifiable data on performance across a myriad of industries and organizations has resulted in a body of study called emotional intelligence (EQ), the “intangibles” that predict success in the workplace.

Highlights & Objectives:  People rarely derail because of the lack of technical skills, but rather because of emotional failings.  This presentation gives leaders a solid understanding of emotional intelligence factors, how EQ impacts the workplace, and competencies related to developing higher levels of emotional intelligence.

At the end of this session, participants will:

1.       Understand the definition of Emotional Intelligence.

2.       Recognize the impact of Emotional Intelligence on the work place.

3.       Learn how Emotional Intelligence is measured.

4.       Learn how to improve their Emotional Intelligence.

2009 Roast & Toast Draws 115 guests!

Last Friday’s Roast & Toast event was a great success, drawing 115 guests and FPRA members. The evening included the presentation of the 2009 PR Professional of the Year Award to Jessica Rye, APR, and the 2009 Chapter Awards. Carey Beam was chosen as the Rising Star; Mat Haggar received the Doris Fleischman Award and Geo Ropert was named Member of the Year. We celebrated our chapter’s 25th anniversary recognizing our Past PResident’s in attendance and guest roasters David Brock, Bill Ellis and Jack Rood “Roasted” Sandy Sanderson. Tweets were coming in all during the evening with fun messages and info for Jessica and Sandy, and our tropical room and food was a hit with guests. The coconut shrimp and Blue Hawaii cocktails started the evening with a tasty twist. Our state President, Lanette Hart, APR, CPRC, attended and Emcee Mike Rein kept the evening lively and entertaining!

Special Guests: Bob Stover, Executive Editor

FLORIDA TODAY continues to expand its multi-media resources, taking news online and utilizing live video streaming. Bob Stover will talk about these new initiatives and address them from a PR perspective regarding how we can utilize these tools in our public relations programs AND provide FLORIDA TODAY editors with rich, relevant news material. He’ll help us understand the relationship between print and online and educate us on we can work more effectively with them. He’ll answer questions such as:

1) is there an online editor and do some stories go online and not in print, or vice versa?
2) Can I submit a video clip and caption or small blurb to be used … Or does FLORIDA TODAY shoot all their own material?

Bob will share video clips with us about how FLORIDA TODAY layers online and print work, as well as show a video on the new live video streaming. Bob will give us an update on the status of things at the paper and share where things are headed for the rest of the year. Joe Curley Visits Space Coast Chapter

January 8 with Joe Curley, APR, CPRC, Crossing the International PR Boundaries on Thursday January 8 with Joe Curley, APR, CPRC of Stingray Solutions was a fun and informative look at International communications.

Those of us that attended this program were fortunate to receive Joe’s insight about practicing Public Relations in foreign countries. As the PR representative for each of Universal Studios’ theme parks in other countries (and that’s just what he does since he retired), Joe is currently involved with Universal “DubaiLand” in Dubai, the largest entertainment park in the world, and a Universal park in Korea, which will end up being a $3.3 Billion project.

Joe discussed, in depth, many of the barriers of international work, such as language, customs, differences in news media, food, and jet lag. Some of the most important tips he gave included:
• Arrange for a local ‘trading partner’ – a local PR firm to do business with and to advise you.
• Pay attention to the local customs! It is important to know what might inadvertently get you into trouble in another culture. For example, just talking to a member of the opposite sex in some Emirate countries can land you in jail.
• Clean up your slang. Americans don’t realize how much of what we say is slang. Can you dig it? (try translating that into Korean and make yourself understood)
• Be VERY careful when hiring a translator. Translators may not truly understand what you’re saying unless they’ve spent time and worked in the U.S. (see advice about slang above)

Joe Curley with Jessica Rye, APR and Suzanne Sparling, APR

Members Rosalind Harvery, Linda Herridge and Tracy Yates

FIT Members Judy Strother, and Alycia Johnson
